Project Portfolio Management

Successfully managing a single project takes a precarious blend of structure and socio-cultural skills. Managing a portfolio of projects is that same blend on steroids. Projects can be an organization’s method to executing a corporate strategy. Yet, the Project Management Office (PMO) is often misunderstood and sometimes misdirected because of how they manage a portfolio of projects.

This one-day training will explore practical methods for selecting and managing a portfolio of projects. A primary focus will be activities that add value to meeting the organization’s mission and how to avoid being labeled as the “paper-pushing bureaucrats,” “road-blocking gatekeepers,” “project cops,” or “sideline observers.” In addition to discussing best practices in both large and small group settings, hands-on exercises will provide reinforcement of each concept’s application.

In this hands-on training our objectives are:
  • To create understanding of where the execution of projects fits into YOUR organization’s structure and WHY
  • Practice the decision-making process to decide WHICH projects your organization are worth investing in
  • Determine the key elements that need to be communicated and understood in your project and portfolio reporting
  • Create a plan for developing your Project Management staff
Key participants would be Senior Project Managers or above or who have responsibility for multiple projects who may or may not be working in a Project/Program Management Office environment
